Garrison Christmas at Fort George

https://www.flickr.com/photos/rumimume/24532425081/

A Garrison Christmas at Fort George Historic Site in Niagara On The Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Some of the the footage was shot by Kearah (my niece). The penny whistle music is by Kearah & Mackenzie (niece & nephew), recorded a few years ago while practicing for 1812 anniversary  celebration.

When editing I tried switching from one scene to something different then back again to keep things moving a bit more.  I think it could still move a bit quicker, but it helped. I got the idea (and lots more) from this Video, it uses Star Wars, South Park, Orsen Wells,  and a few more to talk about story structure.

Why I want a Water Bear

Weather you call them Water Bars, Moss Pigs or Tardigrades they are my new favourite animal and I want one.

They are the perfect pet for someone like me. You can find them almost anywhere (for free) and they are almost impossible to kill through neglect, or any other way for that matter.

Here's the Low Down:
They are about 1mm long and live in water and most easily found on moss.
They look a little like a piglet & move a little like a bear and have claws on all 8 of their feet. Their mouth (or mouthparts) can extend to capture food , which can be plant or animal life that is floating by.

They are cool because they are indestructible. Ok, tardigrades are not undistructable, but they are pretty damn hard to kill. They are most famous for how they basically have a form of stasis that helps them survive in extreme conditions, particularly the lack of water. One of the keys to this process seems to be shedding up to 97% of their 'normal' water content, and replacing if with sugar to protect the cells from destruction by ice crystals,  which is why we can't be thawed out if we freeze solid.  Once they are covered in water, they rehydrate & plod along quite happily.

Tradigrade in it's 'Safe Mode'
How hard are they to kill? Here are some of the things they can survive:
No food or water for extended periods,
being frozen for up to 30 years,
temperatures around 150C,
exposure to 10 times the ionozing radiation it takes to kill us,
10X the pressure experienced in the Marianas trench
& they can survive in a vaccum.

Cool & a little Scary

If that's  not enough they have been around for over 500 million year & have survived unprotected space travel.  Plus there is some evidence that they may have up to 17% foreign (non-tardigrade) DNA which is a cool thing all by it's self.

The #1 reason I want one as a pet is this, With powers like that all they need is a little organization & they could take over the world. So I'm going to start being nice to them, just in case.

You can read  most of what you need to know at the obligatory Wikipedia link.
I'd also suggest doing an image search, as there are so really cool ones.
If after my sales pitch you too want one,  you can learn about the acquisition, care and feeding of your tardigrade here

Cranberry Mead

Muskoka Cranberry Mead by Trafalgar brewing company (Oakville, Ontario).

This is one there season meads,  which include peach, ginger & mead braggot.

Let's  start with the cork, its' a nice touch, just don't expect it to go POP!  The cork was actually pretty tight.

The cranberrry was nice, not too over powering and not too sweet.  Fruit flavours can get so sweet, so fast it can push everything else.

To my taste this is a nice light tasting drink, a good change in rythm from beer, beer, beer. It may taste light but its heavey on the alcahol but it's very smooth drinking for 8.5%.
           I'd buy it again.

New Washrooms at Kelso!

I saw this on the CFOS site. They say the work will start in 2016, but they don't give any dates, so not sure if it will be done for Summerfolk this year.

A second bathroom with running water, that's got to be a good thing.

Hopped Whiskey (& Barley Wine)

A few nights ago we tried  'JP Wiser’s Hopped Whiskey' & 'Tribute' Barley Wine from Renaissance Brewing Company of New Zealand.

The idea with the barley wine was that it would have enough strength to stand up to the whiskey and not just just taste like water. It also helped that we had some left in our holiday stockpile.

How did they taste?

1st I'm not expert or connoisseur so keep that in mind.

The Whiskey tasted like whiskey.  Neither of us found it terribly hoppy. It had a hint of hops & maybe a more complex flavour generally, but it didn't scream hops. It was nice whiskey  just not what a hophead expects when they are looking for something hoppy.

The barley wine was quite good. Dark with toasty & caramely flavours and as I would expect with something this strong  (10.8%) you can taste the high alcohol, but it isn't overwhelming it just sort of lingers in the back.

NOTE:  I wouldn't choose Barley Wine to go with Whiskey again.  They are both full distinctive flaours  so they compete more than they compliment.

Photo's from this post can also be seen on flickr.

Explanation of Lee Filter

As they say in the Article,  Lee filters are pretty universal, & there are lots of them , so It's nice to see someone try and explain what they all do.

As a bonus there's a roscoe to lee equivalency video & spread sheet

Here's the link

P.S. I noticed they are using a light cube just like the one I have, and they used a colour chart, which I should get for studio/controlled work. I I did more of that type of work.
Basically that's just me being a noob and liking when the big kids use the same gear I do.

Buried Street Rediscovered

OK it's not really buried, it's more covered over
& as for being discovered,  there where people who new it was there, just not many.

Still,  it's pretty cool. A street that was covered over around 1900 that has barely been seen or used since. now it's been popularized & may get  turned into something else.

Old underground streets & tunnels are nothing new.  There whole buried streets (old & ancient),  old subway stations and the like, and there are even the tunnels of moosejaw.
