Christmas is over once again.

During the Christmas season I posted (on Flickr) a series of photos called "The Many faces of Santa". The series had photos of different gift giving figures like Santa Claus that I have accumulated over time. Today the last of the set is being posted and they are of the back of these characters.

To the best of my knowledge all the Christmas Gift Givers have come and gone for another year.
Epiphany was yesterday, the twelve days of Christmas are over, the Yules Lads have all departed and today (I believe) is orthodox Christmas.

That's why today's gift giving figures are shown from the back as if they are departing for another year.

The anticipation is nice, the celebration is great, but wrapping up Christmas and putting it away is also satisfying.  To me putting away all of the things that go with Christmas is comforting. It's a sort of a pat on the back that says "we did it again, we had a good Christmas"  and it's sort of the first small steps in preparing for the next Christmas.

Putting things away so that they'll be ready when you need them for next Christmas sparks little ideas of what you might want to do next year... well not really next year, it's now the end of this year.

It is (or was, or soon will be) time to put away the last of the decorations and with them the old year AND get on with the new one.

I hope everyone has had a good Christmas and will have a good 2020.

Scheduling Videos - trying to get caught up, and maybe stay on track

I've been neglecting my videos.

Yes, I haven't been producing as many as I'd like, but that's for another post.  Today I'm writing about how I have videos that are finished, have been delivered to clients, they've posted them and the event is passed ... and I still haven't posted them on my own channels.

I guess what I'm really writing about is how I'm trying to fix that. I don't just want to get caught up on the batch I have waiting, what I'm trying to do is create a system to keep video posting on a regular basis.

As I was looking at a folder full of finished videos needing to be posted I had a few thoughts in quick succession.
1) this is going to be a lot of work.
2) I keep getting myself into this situation
3) How can I make this easier?
4) how can I keep out of this situation (having a back log of stuff to post)
5) I always rush posting videos and don't do a good job.
6) This is a lot of work to let sit here and not show show anyone.
7) Stills are so, much easier to post.

That's when I started to look at things differently.  "Stills are so, much easier to post."  Expect it's not true. Once they are ready to upload a good stills post is not easier than a good video post. You still need a  title, an interesting & accurate description, useful & descriptive keywords/tags. Once it's posted its' a god idea to back it up with a link or mention of it on other platforms and channels.

If the process of posting stills and videos is so similar why did my slightly overwhelmed brain think stills are easier? That's easy to answer. I have a system and I'm in the habit of using that system.

In Praise of Systems

Before I had a system for posting stills they went up when ever I felt like it, singly or in bunches, with random keywords (if any) and descriptions that had very little consistency.

Once I found some software to schedule my stills posts things started to fall into place. I created a post production process that moved images to completion efficiently and consistently & the scheduling software made the posts consistent, in that they where at the same time (then times) each day with certain keywords/tags in most posts and each post had links to other work in the description.  Aside from that it let me make things now and post them when the time was right, like around an event or holiday.

This process brought me from a place where 700 hits in one day was so noteworthy I made a blog post about it. Where as today I'm consistently getting over 4000-5000 hits a day.

What Took Me So Long?

Short answer, I'm not sure. But, once I looked at it that way it was obvious I need a parallel system to get videos to the places where people can see them.

I already have a pretty good system to get videos from idea, into shooting, through post production & into the hands of the client.  But, the supply chain ended there. What I've been working on is a logical & practical set of steps to keep it moving from there to Youtube, Vimeo, and Flickr in a consistent and predictable way. AKA: Systematically & on a schedule.

There are some tools available, but all the ones I've seen are paid options. I'm not ready for a paid service, at least not yet.

What Exactly is that I'm doing?

It's all  very simple and obvious.  The hardest part was just starting it all in motion.
To start once the piece is finished and the client has it I move it into a folder "Needs to be Scheduled". Youtube has a scheduling feature that let you to upload it now and schedule the date it will be posted.
Once it's scheduled on Youtube the project moves into the "Scheduled-Queued" folder  then "Posted" and eventually to the "completed" folder on a pair of portable hard drives for long term storage.

The completed folder is were all of my projects have always gone.  The difference is that I won't have to go in there at random times during the year and try to figure out what has or hasn't been posted to which channels.

The Glue

There are two things that are holding everything together for now. A text doc & a spread sheet.

The text doc holds a description template & a list of common key words grouped together by subject. This helps save time when adding this info when uploading to the different platforms.

The spreadsheet is used to keep track of the projects through the posting process.  It has all the project names, the platforms they need to be posted on, the "Release Date" and fields to indicate what steps have been completed.

This is the kind of stuff that I'd like to see in scheduling software.  For now, I'll spend some time with my system and see how things go and also keep an eye out for something that can keep all the info in one place.

The Schedule

While starting to setup this process I've set the target of posting one video a week for the next 52 weeks, which will end on my my birthday. I have the first video posted on 3 platforms (Youtube, Vimeo & Flickr) 10 more scheduled on all 3. the posts for the first batch aren't perfectly coordinated on all platforms. This is because of my hap-hazard practices in the past.  Some videos had been posted on  or two but never 3 and never at the same time.  So, my 1st scheduling task was to get the first batch of videos on all platforms without any repeats.

Then I started to schedule some seasonal stuff.  I have a Christmas project and an Easter Project ready.  They are both  scheduled appropriately and I'm working on finishing a few personal projects and getting them into the scheduling system.

Well Duh.

Everything in this post is pretty obvious.  Make schedule, organize the projects, stick to the schedule, keep track of the projects through the system.
It is obvious and pretty simple and for some reason I never applied it to videos.  I used it to post 3 stills a day every day for years. But never applied it to videos.
Videos that take so much more time and more work to plan, to shoot and to finish in post. All that work and I slacked off when it came to the part that allowed people to (hopefully) see and appreciate them.  Duh!

What Next?

Now that I've song the praises of scheduling and regular posting we'll have to see how it works.
Will I be able to produce enough content to fill the schedule? That will be difficult but, "I think I can" If I do will I be able to get more people to look at my videos?  That might require  a bit more work.

How I Halloween | #5 Local Events

Local Events

October is a great time of year for outdoor special events. The sun is usually less punishing (especially since most these are at night) and the air is fresh and invigorating. Rain can be a pain but, if you prepare for the weather it can add to the spooky atmosphere .

I promised this post would be quick and to the point, so lets get to it.

1) Fort George Ghost Tours
IMHO the best ghost tour around. No costumes, creative writing, jump scares or cheese. Great stories told in the places they are set. This is the bench mark by which I judge all others.

2) Fort Erie All Hallow's Eve
Nice historical tour with a burning of the Guy at the end. On the down side, every time I've been there (6ish) it's been a step for step, word for word repeat of the times before.  The repetition didn't bother me when the price was very low.  With the new higher ticket price, I 'll probably skip this one for 2018. To be fair, the new ticket price comes with a movie, if that's your thing. Personally I like to watch my Halloween movies (&TV) with a Pumpkin Ale so, this isn't really my venue.

3) Drummond Hill Cemetery Tours
Not scary but informative and a chance to wander around a cemetery on an autumn night without getting in trouble.

4) Bridgeburg Haunted History Tour
 Never Been but, looks interesting.

5) Ridgeway parade
They call it "A long-standing Ridgeway tradition!". As an outsider, have only just learn of it. Now you know as much as I do.

6) Heartland Forrest Pumpkin fest
Something for kids. I would expect this to be you run of the mill community event.  Little kids will like it. Bigger kids will go but, pretend there too cool to like it. High School Kids will go to get volunteer hours and parents will go because it's something to do with their kids.

7) Purple Pentacle Samhain
One more I don't have nay direct experience with. I I had to guess I'd say could be really cool or kinda lame. Don't think you can tell unless you go but, what do I know.

Next Time...

Recipes. I'll have links and reviews of Halloween recipes and maybe instructions for the Best Carmel Corn Ever (at least my favourite).

To see more of my Fall, Thanksgiving and Halloween photos, browse my Flickr Albums.
I even have a plans for a post dedicated to nothing but Halloween Photos (not all mine).

How I Halloween or Sharing what I like about Halloween | #1 - An introduction

This is the first in a series of  posts about how I celebrate Halloween.  I'm hope to get a new Halloween post up a little more often than once a week.

I love Halloween and have a a big store of media & info to help celebrate the season.

My plan is to share lots of media along with some more 'real world' stuff like local events, recipes and who knows what.

Virtually everything mentioned will be low to no cost. Mostly because I firmly believe that a home-made Halloween is the most fun.

Let's start with a bit of a sampler. Each Category should eventually get it's own post with more examples, suggestions & links.

Follow the links below to start getting into the Halloween mood.

1) Librivox Recording - Famous modern Ghost Stories

Librivox is a cool project (as they say) "To make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet." .   What that means to us is free audio books of anything that's not copyrightedOne of the  cool things they do is create collections and anthologies around topics, genres & even seasons.

2) OTR Show - Nightfall - Info - Episodes

OTR stands for Old Time Radio. It usually covers radio broadcasts from a time it was the only game in town and into the the early years of TV when  some popular shows had both Radio and TV versions.
Today's example isn't really old enough to be called OTR , but it's almost 40 years old & it's really cool.

Nightfall was made by CBC  starting in 1980 and aside from being a bit dated or "of the time" it's really well done and when I read the following review I was sold. "Holy wow, who knew Canadians could be so scary? Seriously, though - this is a very well done horror series from the early 80s. Really creepy stuff!"

3) Podcast - Jim Harolds Campfire

We have finally reach a point where almost everyone knows what a podcast is, so no explanations needed.  podcasts are great, everyone loves them and I'll share some of favorite spooky & Halloween casts.

Today's podcast is the campfire. The premise is that people call in in tell about their experiences, like they where sitting around a campfire. Due to the fact that everyone tells their own story some can be a little generic and others are so full of details it can be a bit hard to follow. Then you get the story you've been waiting for. Weather you can see yourself in the situation, or it super creepy or just really well told. You've heard a story that's going to stick with you, the kind of story you'll want to retell a friend.  Instead of retelling it, tell your friend where they can listen to it too.

4)Flickr Photo Group/Pool - The Vintage Halloween Pool

Halloween, & Christmas,  seem like a good opportunity to look into the past.  Some times our past & sometimes much father than that. I love the the old photos in this group. The decorations , ads and especially the costumes. They run the gambit from some old clothes and a paper bag mask to very elaborate costumes that are the antithesis of a store bought plastic mask and smock.
There are more groups or photo pools from flickr coming up in another post. One thing about flickr, if someone has a topic they're interested in, someone else has gathered a group of photos about it.

5) Local Event - Fort George Ghost Tour

Of all the ghost and cemetery tours this is the one I like the best and the one I keep going back to.
Of all the categories I've set up for myself, I think this will be the hardest. There are ghost tours, cemetery tours, & fort tours. Once those are out of the way it gets a little harder to come up with events that aren't just another temporary fun house.

6) Recipe - Pumpkin Fudge

If there is any holiday that's synonymous with sweet treats Halloween is it. So it only makes sense to have pumpkin Fudge as the first recipe.  There are tons and tons of recipes for anything and everything. My plan is to keep the ones I pass on relatively simple and to have tried them before sharing them. There are some pumpkin pancakes & warming adult drink I'm really looking forward to.

Tune in Again

That's the sample pack of how I Halloween. I'm not sure if it will be representative of the rest of these posts, but hopefully you found something you enjoyed. If you did check back soon for more Halloween fun.

2016 My Christmas List

Christmas List

Here is this years Christmas List
Just like last year, I have a range of things from Easy to Unlikely. But, it's Christmas so why not dream a little.

New this year I've divided the list into two parts.

First there are things you don't have to buy, but are very valuable & very much appreciated.
  • Post, Re-post, forward, share or tell someone about something I made/posted
  • Consider being in something or helping to make something (video, podcast etc.).

Second are things that have price tags.
  1. crocks - $Store
  2. toques - $Store
  3. Edison bulbs - $ store
  4. headphones - from $ store
  5. Hot olives from Roman cheese or Lococos
  6. finger gloves
  7. pillow
  8. Red & Green Totes
  9. Book: The Old Magic of Christmas – Yuletide traditions for the darkest days of the year.-linda raedisch
  10. Podcast subscriptions.  I'm a bit of a Podcast junkie & several of the shows I listen too have paid (monthly) subscriptions that allow access to additional content.
  11. Christmas records (real vinyl records) almost any Christmas record but the one I really want is Firestone Christmas album #4 (Firestone Presents Your Favorite Christmas music). It's a 7 record set & I have them all except #4 (below). So, if your at a second hand store or a garage sale & see Firestone #4 you have found the perfect gift!
I think that's about it for now,  Merry Christmas!

Too Early for Summerfolk?

I'm planning to post old sumemrfolk photos (1997 -2010) online before the 3rd weekend in August. After collecting Summerfolk photos from old folders on old hard drives & copying them all to one location it was time to start sorting.

Sorting out 97-99 into individual years is going to be somewhere between difficult & impossible. I may end up dividing them in  some other way other than chronologically.

It's fun to see some of the old pics and how things (& people) have changed, but it's amazing how little some things have stayed the same.

So far I've gotten through about 500 & there's still more to get through & then the daunting task of sorting out those early years.

Once there all sorted & ready to go I'll make another post & then the photos will be posted to Flickr in small (ish) batches each day leading up to this years summerfolk.

1/4 Million Hits

I now have a Quarter of a Million hit on flickr (252 952) and nearly 3000 today.

Sounds cool, & it Is pretty cool that people are viewing my stuff, but I saw someone last week with 2.9 Million hits and some people can get 10 000 in a day. So heading in the ruight direction, but still a ways to go.

Another Red Letter Day!

Red Letter Day

It's been another 'Red Letter Day' for views on my flickr account. Actually it was yesterday (Sunday) and it was the biggest day yet with 713 views.

There where  a few things conspiring to make the numbers so high (compared to what I usually get), but it's still nice to know that when the circumstances are right, people will respond.

Time for a Happy Dance!

Happy Dance!

(As mentioned recently) I've been making an effort to get more eyes on my photos & it seems to be working.  I've had very nearly 1000 views on flickr in the last 3days, a well as more faves & comments than usual.

These may not be earth shattering numbers, but I'm pretty happy with them.

The next job is to get some more traffic to my video content. This can be a bit more difficult. Watching a video is more of a commitment than checking out a few pics.

I hope to get a bit video traffic when I release a new project next week.

The plan is to have a trailer out my Monday in all the usual places.

Link of The Day - New pics

I found some Photos from a few years ago I had intended to post  but they never made it anywhere.

So I put them up, there might be some more going up in the next week.
