Summerfolk | The Countdown has begun

That's right, the countdown to Summerfolk has begun.

Sixty weeks from today we will be leaving for Summerfolk 2021. I know it's a long countdown but, that's not going to stop me.

There's been various ideas about what to do to mark this year's Summerfolk weekend. We have about 8 weeks to figure out how we're going to do that.

PoTd -

It's Back ! I wish I could say "Back by popular demand", but it's back.  Mostly because I haven't been posting enough and PoTd is a little more stream lined than some other types of posts.

Starting with a photo & adding a description & maybe a bit of background is usually more straight forward than looking around the world and coming up with something to write about, then writing, then editing, & then making a photo or graphic to go with the writing.

That being said I do hope to do some posts that are more focused on the writing than the images . I might even get around to some posts About writing or at least what I'm writing.   I'm hoping to get back to work on a script I was working on as a writing exercise/practice. If that happens I also hope to put some progress updates and possibly samples here on the blog.

Flowers and Photos

I once heard a Quote to the effect (I can't remember the exact wording) "If  you want to take pretty pictures, start by putting your camera in-front of something pretty"

You can substitute "pretty" for may things "exciting", "Dramatic", "Emotional". The point is, start with a subject that represents the look you want to achieve.

It's a guilty pleasure of mine to go for a walk & put that into practice.  It feels sort of like cheating, to try and make an appealing photo of a subject that already has lots of appeal and often has most of the element you need for a good photo.

I can & do still mess up some of these shots. But, it still feels like cheating when the photos that where the easiest to take turn out to be some of the best shots of the day.

I'm not advocating against choosing an interesting subject. In fact finding a great subject is something most photographers strive for. Sometimes I feel spoiled for choice and miss hunting for a good subject.

That probably says more about me than it does about photography.

Summerfolk 2017 in 60 Seconds - GRADED

I updated the slide show from the previous post.
The only difference is that grading or stylized colour has been added.

Colour Grading is something I find fascinating to watch but elusive to create.  When you see before & after shots of something before & after it was graded the difference can be huge. It obviously looks different,  but it also feels different & that is usually the thing that's more important. The colour enhances the mood & emotion of the story. Even if you never see a before & after ideally you will still get the feeling they're going for.

Grading is hard. it's even hard to do a half baked job of it. It's really hard to do well and the people who do it well are wizards.  I can't afford to send my little videos to a wizard to work on, which is why I'm trying to work towards doing a half baked job of it.

The idea with this one was to have it feel like dreaming of a happy memory then waking up & being a little disappointed that the dream is over, but happy you had it.

Original (no) Colour

Colour Graded

I'm not sure if the colouring really makes that much difference here, but you have to start somewhere.

Walking around Niagara Falls Ontario Canada.
The house was boarded up after a fire & The UFO was the only art I could find.  Maybe someone is suggesting the fire was started by a UFO... probably not.

Some time you get more interesting views by walking the alleys than you get walking the streets. Lucky for me there are some good alleys in my neighbourhood.

Nature is great at providing lots of shapes & textures for photographers. I've heard that nature doesn't create them specifically for photographers,  but I'm not sure I believe that.

Pic-of-The-day - "Old Bridge"

Machinery on an old railway bridge across an old Welland Canal.  I'm not sure what the machinery was used for,  it doesn't look like a lift bridge, there are some on the current canal, maybe it was a swing bridge that rotated around a center I was more interested in shapes and colours while I was shooting and didn't give much thought to the mechanics until later.

A summer afternoon walk with a camera.
When I need more content all I need to do is wander around my neighbourhood.

If I lucky I end up with a them,  If I'm really lucky I end up with a video. If I not so lucky I get a bunch of unrelated images, still not too bad. On this wander I got the chance  get some nice dappled light at the top of the 180' deep gorge carved by the Niagara river.

I'm fascinated by the machinery at the center of the bridge.  I'm speculating that it was a swing bridge when there was active shipping in this version of the canal.

Pic-of-The-day - "Yet another obsession".

Along with my other obsessions & favourite things to photograph, I'm obsessed with wiht railway tracks. There's so many reason to love them, aside from the visual appeal, which is enough all by itself.

So many are seldom-used or completely unused. They are stoutly constructed entities from the past that still work as well today as they ever did.

They are industrial, historical & officially off limits. A railway brings so many things to mind, travel,  & adventure, there's also nostalgia & a bit of loneliness or at least isolation that's mixed in with the entropy of an old railway.

With all that sub-text, how can I resist?
